Featuring Fiber Arts
Mandisa Smith, a native of Detroit and former member of Lawrence Street Gallery, employs the ancient technique of wet felting to meticulously craft exquisite wearable art, sculptural pieces, abstract works, and unique home accessories. Her artwork has been showcased at prestigious venues both locally and nationally, including the Scarab Club, the Detroit Institute of Arts, New York, California and others. As a former co-owner of Detroit Fiber Works, Mandisa takes pride in uplifting the work of fellow Detroit artists. Look for her new studio AKOMA ART HOUSE at Oakland Avenue Art Farm very soon.
Now she is uplifting the art of 41 artists she juried into the Fiber Fest 2024 at Lawrence Street Gallery. Smith discovered a wide range of talent from near and far. Creativity has woven its way into their lives through one of these methods: crochet, fiber collage, quilting, weaving, tapestry, shibori, or mixed media fiber construction. You will be amazed at the intricate shapes and forms fiber can take to create unique, memorable art. Who would think of adding fiber to a painting, texturizing elements for color and design? Walk through our exhibit and awaken your imagination to experience anew the many ways fiber can take on a life of its own in these pieces.
