“My work looks at shadow as light, and light as shadow, revealing imagery in both positive and negative space in a framework of changing orientations. Forms and patterns, which create visual rhythms, are informed by shape-memories and emotional reverences”, explains Shipps. “They are defined and refined by their adjacent counter- forms, creating a constant meditative conversion of balance.”

Richard ShippsWorking with a variety of materials, paper is his preferred medium for its immediacy. It’s the most efficient way for him to get to the essence of a shape and to explore the visual possibilities.

Richard Shipps began cutting paper and other materials while working in an animation studio in the 1960’s. In the early 70’s he formed the creative boutique agency, DD&B Studios and staging company; Stage Fright in Birmingham, MI. the company was a magnet for creatives who designed and executed large-scale multi-image shows and presentations for IBM, AT&T, GM, Dominos and Little Ceasars. He explored mobile making in the late 90’s and had an audience of museum goers at places such as the Hirschhorn in Washington, D.C.

Shipps’ paper cutting expanded in earnest in Chicago in 2007. While there he was recognized by Columbia’s Center for Book and Paper Arts. He had a pop-up studio for an unprecedented two years. His paper cuttings have been widely exhibited in Chicago, New York, Amsterdam and worldwide in homes and businesses. He has twice exhibited at Grand Rapid’s Art Prize at the DeVos Center, his first year earning acclaim as one of the top 25 entrants. The LG company chose Shipps to create a visual of their new phone out of paper.

A native Michigander, Shipps spent 14 years in Chicago but now calls Ferndale his home and is a proud member of Lawrence Street Gallery.
