Metro Highlights – An All New Competition about the Metro Detroit Region

We are focusing on Detroit and its suburban neighborhoods, and the  character of this region in this new competition exhibit.  Participating artists are sharing their visions of the cultures and their experiences in this region.

Our  juror is Rachel Reynolds Z, a professor of drawing and painting at Oakland University. When not creating art in her Hamtramck studio, she also shares her knowledge of art with adult learners at the Flint Institute of Arts, painters meeting weekly in Grosse Pointe, youth in Farmington Hills  and high school home-schoolers.

For jurying this exhibit, Rachel was interested in the various ways in which artists are able to translate and bring attention to the details, textures and cultures that comprise the subject of  “place.”  Urban environments are rich in character and specificity that arouse the senses. Each of the pieces selected to be included in the exhibition successfully communicate or bring awareness to unique aspects of our metropolitan landscape.
